Hello All
« il: 03 Febbraio, 2014, 12:16:04 »
Hello Everyone,

I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Sam Jones. Firstly, I wanted to apologise for not speaking Italian. I thought it was better to write in English rather than attempting to use google translate. I hope that it is ok.

I am British but recently moved to Lausanne, Switzerland for work. I am a keen fish breeder, including Betta, Killfish, angelfish and much more. I recently had to sell all my fish due to the move but once settled here I want to start a few small breeding projects. As I now live much closer to Italy I thought it would be a good idea for me to sign up to the forum, with much help from Roberto (THANK YOU!).

When I was younger I used to work at my local fish shop and was an active member of the British Killifish Assocaition (BKA) and have kept a number of different Killi species in the past. My favourites are the Nothobranchius.

Just so you all know a bit more about me and the Killifish I have kept here is a list of the most of the species I have kept and bred in the past:
N. Eggersi
N. foerschi
N. korthausae
N. symoensi
F. gardneri gardneri
F. scheeli scheeli (my first killi)
Rivulus rubrolineatus
Rachovia hummelincki
Cynolebias whitei
Aphyosemion austral (Gold and Chocolate)
Aplocheilus lineatus

I joined the forum as I am looking for reliable sources of Killifish and Killifish eggs. Mainly Austrolebias or Simpsonichthys and some non-annuals like Fundulopanchax or Epiplatys that could tolerate some cooler temperatures for a cooler water system I am planning. I am also looking for Notho species/eggs especially rachovii or eggersi.

Any help the members of the AIK can provide me would be greatly appreciated. I am also hopeful that I can become involved in some discussions and provide information on some of the species I have kept in the past, to any one that is interested.

Thank you,
Sam

Hi Sam,

even if I am pretty new in this forum (and with Killis at all), i want to say welcome.
I'm actually Italian but I live in Germany since I was little. So my Italian isn't good as well  :D
The guys in this forum are great and I think you did well to register here.

regards,
Renato

Hi Sam,

regarding the eggs, I think i have something of N.  Kilomberoensis if you are interested.

Thank you for the warm welcome.

Filippo, I think possibly you have me confused with someone else. I don't think I have attended an AIK convention before. I do have a lot of experience with many different types of killifish and especially with the breeding and raising of fry and I would be very happy to help with anyone's problems etc. Sorry I am not who you thought I am. Thank you very much for the offer of some eggs. What is the calculated wet date? I am very interested but would probably not be able to take any eggs just yet.

I still have not set up any tanks (only moved in January) and have no BBs eggs or other live foods ready. I want to make sure I am ready for any fry I hatch as I am going to try and increase my fry growth rates. I moved away from killis to breed show betta and learned a lot about the raising of fry. I now want to try these new tricks to the raising of killifish. I'm hoping to find some eggs that could be wet towards the end of Feb/beginning of March.

Shall I post a new topic in the "market place" asking for eggs or fish?

Sam

Hey,

Sorry.

BBS eggs are baby brine shrimp eggs (artemia). I used to get them from a friend of mine who ran a dry goods business but he's moved to Malta and the business is temporarily offline. Thinking of getting them through ebay now.

Roberto/Filippo, it is absolutely fine. I have met a lot of people in my time keeping fish and I am always confusing people and forgetting names. Hopefully we will get to meet at some point in the future and I can make as good an impression as the person I was confused with.

Thank you both for the translation, i use chinese artemia eggs, they are cheap and works fine for me.
Even if i don't breed them with airpumps.

I would be very interested how you hatch them without air pumps? And how many you are able to produce per batch?

Thanks,
Sam

well, i use this cups to breed them. I have always 2 cups in function so i get fresh BBS (i learn fast huh? ;D) every day.
I love this cups because they are silent and you can take the nauplii totaly clean without any eggs or eggshells.
It works very well for me.
Obviously the quantity depends from the quantity of eggs you put in. I never compared if there would be a better rate using the traditional incubator with the same quantity of eggs but the pro's i already mentioned are pretty important for me. I hate all that work to separate the eggs from the nauplii using light/filters etc.

there is an english version too ;)

I have seen this type of hatchery before but always used air powered hatchets that I make myself. Can you get enough BBS to feed a large batch of fry? Or do you have to incorporate other live foods, such as microworms?

The quieter my new breeding set-ups the better but I'm not sure I'd get enough BBS using this method. Would be helpful to hear your experiences.

I agree with Sam. This kind of device doesn't produce enough hatch for large number of fry or species.
I've try it in the past but with poor result. The best way to obtain good amount of BBS is place a bubbling bottle in a styrofoam box with 24 hours light inside (say 2 watts lamp) that increase the temperarure inside the box (around 28 °C but also 30 °C is good). The styrofoam box is also useful to reduce the bubbling noise ;) other than maintain the right temp.

Ps:
To Reanto. Try to put a small airstone (connected to air pump obvioulsly) inside and see the production increase.

Traduzione:

PS
Per Renato. Prova a mettere una pietra porosa (collegata all'areatore ovviamente) all'inteno dello schiuditoio e vedrai che la resa aumenta.
